The morphological distinction between species is often difficult.
The bamboo flowers only rarely, and botanical identification methodology is partly based on the morphology of the inflorescence. Yet, even after examining the flowers, some bamboos are still difficult to differentiate.
The appearance of a bamboo can be altered by its ecosystem. One subject in a particular environment may present a different shape than another one, particularly in stressful situations. Sometimes a distinctive character does not reoccur systematically (culms of P. flexuosa for example).
