The most common type is the cespitose type (VII).
The pachymorphe type is present mainly in tropical areas (72%) and appears as the ancestral form of the leptomorphe type adapted to temperate zones (75%). This hypothesis is based on several arguments: - Only 10% of tropical species have a type leptomorphe while 28% of temperate species have still pachymorph rhizomes (--> legacy) - Some Leptomorph species have the ability to switch from one type of rhizome to a similar type depending of the age and environmental conditions (unlike type pachymorphe). this reveals heredity capacity to change. ( --> differentiation).
